Central acting drugs

Drugs that lower blood pressure by acting in the brain and central nervous system.

Cerebral angiography

A diagnostic test that produces X-ray images of the blood vessels of the head and the blood flowing through them; used to diagnose stroke

Cerebrospinal fluid

the liquid that fills the areas surrounding the brain and spinal cord

Cerebrovascular accident

The sudden blockage of a blood vessel in the brain, caused by a blood clot, resulting in decreased blood flow in the brain. It can also result from a ruptured blood vessel.

Cerebrovascular disease

Blockages in the arteries of the head and neck.

chest x-ray

a test that produces images of the organs in your chest, including the heart and lungs; shows if you have fluid buildup in the lungs or if your heart has become enlarged (signs of heart failure)

Chlamydia pneumoniae

A virus that causes flu-like respiratory problems that can lead to pneumonia or bronchitis. It has also been associated with heart disease


A waxy fat that is present in all human beings, coming from either the liver (which manufactures about 80% of it) or from eating animal products such as meat, eggs, or dairy products.

Cholesterol absorption inhibitors

Drugs that lower cholesterol by blocking the small intestine's ability to absorb cholesterol. Often prescribed along with a statin e.g., ezetimibe (Zetia).

chronic heart failure

the inability of the heart to fill with or pump out enough blood to meet the body's needs; also called heart failure, congestive heart failure

chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)

a condition in which weakened and stretched veins are unable to pump enough blood back to the heart, causing blood to pool in the legs; caused by severe chronic vein disease


a medication used to treat peripheral artery disease by relieving leg pain symptoms and improving walking ability


A technique of taking moving pictures to visualize blood vessels by monitoring the passage of an opaque dye through them.
