Distal protection devices

Devices that capture blood clots and fatty plaque that are dislodged during angioplasty.

Diuretics

also called water-pills, a class of medications used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure; they reduce the amount of fluid in the body by stimulating your kidneys to get rid of excess water and salt as urine

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)

An omega-3 fatty acid found in fish, particularly oily fish. Fish oils may lower your risk of heart attack particularly if you already have heart disease.

Dose titration

When the dose of a prescribed medication is started off low and slowly increased to the prescribed amount over time, in order to limit side effects.

Drug-eluting stents

Tiny wire mesh tubes designed to prop open surgically cleared arteries and deliver drugs to the site to prevent reclogging. See Stents.

duplex ultrasound

a diagnostic test that combines ultrasound images of the blood vessels with a recording of the blood as it moves through them; used to diagnose peripheral artery disease and vein disease

Dysarthria

difficulty speaking; caused by weakness or paralysis in the muscles of the face and mouth after a stroke

Dyspepsia

The medical term for indigestion.

Dysphagia

Difficulty swallowing; caused by damage to a specific part of the brain during a stroke

Dyspnea

Shortness of breath, a symptom of heart failure. See also Paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea.
